11 Epic Couch Co-op Video Games

The current trend is to have entire video games hosted online. The days of inviting your friends over for epic couch battles or party games has slowly died out. As a casual gamer, I find the best video games to be the ones spent played with a friend next to you. I have taken the time to assemble a list of 11 old and modern games that are best played with a friend or your enemy sitting right next to you.  All photos used for this list have been taken from Amazon.

#1 Star Wars Battlefront

Star Wars is a culture icon. The classic series has been brought back to life by Disney's recent surge in movies. The movies have restarted the Battlefront series, but the first release didn't compare to the original. Playing with a friend could be the casual run and gun style experience or an intense ground war. Sometimes, you just need to run around with the ewoks.

#2 Halo Reach

To be honest, Halo Reach is the only Halo game in the series that I have played. It was a classic to me. The type of game where your friend comes over, jumps in, and then doesn't leave until you are finished or unable  to keep your eyes open. My only advice is to make sure you watch the cut scenes.

#3 Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead was once considered the pinnacle of team based shooters. The story was capturing, the game play challenging, but not overly difficult.  The perfect game for casual players or the dedicated pc fan base. I have spent hours playing this game with friends.

#4 Left 4 Dead 2

The only reason I said Left 4 Dead was once considered the best team shooter was because it was dethroned by it's sequel. Left for Dead 2 took the excellent qualities of the first game, and improved on nearly everything. The only complain I have is the AI seems to struggle. I have yet to meet anyone who likes Ellis. For anyone looking for a game to play with a friend, this might be the game I would have to recommend.

#5 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

If you enjoy struggling through retro games, this one is for you. 2/3 of the game is of average difficulty. There is something about running around as Legolas releasing a volley of arrows that satisfies the soul. The final third of the game is one of the most difficult ventures I have ever attempted.  The gameplay itself is unforgiving and the difficult. The legacy nature of the console simply makes it harder.

#6 Mario Kart (Wii)

Mario Kart has been a staple within my household for many years. Every generation seems to get a little better. My personal favorite still goes to the wii version. The first year where the motion sensor technology was used. The best part of the game is the  sensation in the back of your neck as you feel your friend attempting to lunge at you to force you to relinquish your lead. There are no friends in Mario Kart.

#7 Super Monkey Ball 2

I feel like Monkey Ball is a forgotten series. An under-appreciated game cube release.  Monkey Ball provides serious party-game fun. The campaign maps are challenging without being stressful, but the real fun is with the mini-games. Hours can be spent with the 10 different games.

#8 Pokemon Stadium N64

Going back to my childhood, Pokemon Stadium was a game where I invested hours. The mini games as well as the head to head battles with a friend never grow old. Anyone who grew up playing Pokemon most likely loves this game. It provides endless hours of entertainment with the right amount of nostalgia.

#9 Portal 2

Portal 2 is not for the feint of heart. You will grow frustrated. You might fight the urge to launch your controller.  Chances are your teammate just forced your death again for giggles. Portal 2 will cause you to stop and think. Once you figure out the puzzle, the "ah-hah" moment is amazing. Defeating this game is one of my favorite video game accomplishments.

#10 Lego Stars Wars

Honestly, any Lego game provides a serious amount of couch co-op fun. My personal favorite has to be Star Wars Lego. The settings, the characters, and the diner has a local area was brilliant. Taking a loved series and turning it into legos was genius. At times, the idea seems overplayed now, but this original game brings back fond memories and plenty of play-ability.

#11 Rocket League

Simple rules, simple mechanics, and endless amounts of skill. Rocket League is easy to pick up at any moment with only 5 minute games. The game seems simple at first, but the fine mechanics of the game slowly become apparent over time.  Combining high speed cars with a soccer ball and EDM music can hardly go wrong.
