#1 Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary, built in 1829, used to be a prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It created the Pennsylvania System, or what we know as solitary confinement. Due to the harsh conditions, it caused many inmates to go insane. Reports of paranormal activity have been occurring since 1940 but after the prison was abandoned in 1971 the reports have greatly increased. Experiences include: disembodied footsteps, distant talking, banging of cell doors, ghostly faces in cell block 4, shadow figures sliding down walls in cell block 6, evil laughs from cell block 12, and shadow figures that quickly disappear when approached.

#2 Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Opened in 1920, Waverly Hills was originally a two-story building but then was reconstructed in 1926. Through the mid 20th century it served as a tuberculosis hospital. The terrifying rumors questionable experimental procedures and mistreatment of patients may be whats behind the haunting events. Experiences include: disembodied voice, sudden cold spots, screams from empty rooms, moving shadow figures, and full bodied apparitions.

#3 Monte Cristo Homestead

June, New South Wales is the location of the Monte Cristo Homestead which is believed to be to most haunted area in Australia. There have been a number of tragic events revolving around this location. Many deaths including a child dropped down the stairs, a maid falling from the balcony, and a stable boy burning to death. The son of the caretaker, Harold, was chained up in the cottage for 40 years. When he was finally found, he was curled up on the floor next to his dead mother's body.

#4 Castle of Good Hope

Built in the 17th, the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, South Africa, served as a replenishment station for ships passing through. The most famous story about this location involved the mysterious death of the governor, Gysbert van Noodt on April 23rd, 1728. He caught seven soldiers attempting to desert the military and sentenced them to death. One of the soldiers placed a curse on the governor and demanded that he witness their deaths. When the governor did not attend, he was found with a look of terror on his face slouched over his desk later that day.

#5 The Tower of London

The Tower of London, with it's extensive history of torture in execution going back 900 years, is believed as the most haunted location in the United Kingdom. The creepiest of reports involves the appearance of children wondering the castle. They can be seen wearing night gowns while holding hands, all while having a look of terror covering their faces. It is believed they were deemed illegitimate children of a Prince by the Parliament. One day the vanished under the rumors of being murdered by the Duke of Gloucester, their uncle. Two small skeletons were even found under a staircase under the White Tower.

#6 Ancient Ram Inn

The British Isles hold the most haunted location of the Ancient Ram Inn that was built in 1145. Behind the haunts are tales of evil spirits, devil worship, and even the sacrifice of children. When it served as a bed and breakfast, people would often leave in the middle of the night. Many claimed to be touched or pulled, see full bodied apparition in their rooms, and just having this overwhelming sense of evil. The current owner claimed to be grabbed by the arm and dragged out of bed across the room on his first night in the house.

#7 Fort George, The Citadel

At almost 300 years old, Canada's most haunted site, the Halifax Citadel has received hundreds of paranormal encounter reports. The most common of reports are seeing apparitions. There is a little girl that follows people in the ghost tour and some have reported that she will even hold their hands. Other experiences involve: doors banging, furniture moving, gusts of wind in sealed rooms, feeling of nausea and being watched, and occasionally being pushed by something.

#8 Banff Springs Hotel

Built over 125 years ago, the Banff Springs hotel in Alberta Canada, was a luxury stop for many train travelers. Some reports include a woman breaking her neck by falling down a staircase after her dress caught fire and a family that was murdered in room 873. The door to this room was even sealed off by bricks. But many have witness Sam Macauley, the former bellman from the 60's and 70's. He walks people to their rooms and sometimes turns on lights and opens locked doors.

#9 Chateau de Brissac

Originally built in the 11th century Chateau de Brissac was rebuilt in 1502. In the 15th century a double murder occurred within the walls of the castle. Which resulted in one of it's more popular ghosts. The "Green Lady," wearing her green dress, is seen roaming the castle usually in the tower room of the chapel. The terrifying part is when you look at he face she has no eyes or nose, just gaping holes. Sometimes you can also hear her moans in the early hours throughout the castle.

Dating back to the Iron Age, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, sits overlooking what is believe as the most haunted city on the planet. Stories of torture and many bloody battles are behind the many paranormal reports. Experiences include: feelings of intense dread and sadness, feeling of being watched, strange sounds, unexplained mists, sudden cool spots, strange lights, shadow figures, and the feeling of being touched or pulled.

#11 Island of the Dolls

The strangest of locations would have to be The Island of the Dolls on Lake Teshuilo in Xochimilco in Mexico City. Julian Santan Barrera moved to the island in the 1950's. Unaware of the dark history Julian moved their the become a recluse,  a person who lives in voluntary seclusion from the public and society. Legend says that a girl drowned in the murky waters sometime in the 1920's. It is believed that her spirit was unable to leave the island and locals would never go near the area. Julian claimed that the girl started speaking to him when he moved to the island. He soon began to place dolls around the island for the girl to play with. But Julian told his nephew it was becoming harder to please the little girl and he soon might be facing the same fate of the murky waters. Later that day his nephew found his uncle in the canal face down. He drowned in the same exact spot the girl died years earlier. Experiences include: doll's whispering at night, having their eyes follow you, and some of the dolls even move.
