11 Odd Music Genres

If you enjoy dad rock or classical music, its time to expand your music listening horizon. Here are some of the strangest existing music genres to date.

#1 Ska

Ska is a mix of calypso music (beat music from the Caribbean, precursor to reggae) and jazz music from America. It is usually noted for upbeat, fast paced music (and lots of horns). At some point in the 70’s it combined with punk music to be a slightly faster, more (but still not very) aggressive version of itself.

#2 Prog Metal

Progressive metal, a combination of older heavy metal (like Iron Maiden and Metallica) and progressive rock (like Rush). Most bands in this genre utilize long, complexly layered songs and concept albums (albums that tell a continuous story).

#3 Gothic Country

“Ellen Glasgow ... in what she called the "Southern Gothic School" ... stating that their work was filled with "aimless violence" and "fantastic nightmares."” This was a quote written about the emerging style of Gothic writing in the southern United States. It is this writing that this genre of music takes its tone from. A form of country music that has been twisted in a way that makes it a perfect fit for a horror movie.

#4 Steampunk

This is a weird genre because it is less defined by its sound than its theme. The aesthetic of its singers and their lyrics has far more consistency than the sound the bands have, with all of its songs telling stories all seemingly in the same, odd, Victorian inspired world, despite the moderately large number of bands making this kind of music.

#5 Dark Cabaret

Dark Cabaret is a time of the year appropriate entry. Cabaret music started as a kind of performance, with it being played in places like restaurants and pubs, places where the audience was typically seated at tables watching the performers (usually accompanied by dancers). Dark Cabaret as a style has evolved into a horror influenced version that takes notes from Gothic and punk music.
