11 Weird Sports

When we think of sports, most of us think baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. This is only the tip of the iceberg in the sports realm, however, as there are thousands of different sports we’ve never heard of. Here is a list of 11 of the weirdest sports out there.

#1 Jai Alai

Four players on two teams use special scoops to pick up and throw a ball against a wall, with the goal to throw it in a way that the opponents cannot catch it and throw it back to the wall. It can be caught in the air or after its first bounce. Games are usually played to 7 points, with a rotating group of 7 teams in which losers switch out after a point is scored.

#2 Hurling

An Irish game that combines soccer, golf, lacrosse, baseball, and football. There are two teams of 15 people, each with a special stick called a hurley. The stick is used for scooping up the ball off the ground, balancing the ball (it must be carried this way after 4 steps), hitting the ball like a baseball bat, and hitting the ball off the ground like a golf club. The goal is a normal soccer net with football like goal posts on its corners. In the goal is 3 points, but above the goal and between the crossbars is 1 point.

#4 Tejo

Tejo is the national sport of Columbia and the most casual one on this list. It is played by throwing a round stone/piece of metal called a "tejo" onto a 45 degree board covered in clay. On the board there is a metal ring with small, colorful triangular packs of gunpowder, which explode once hit.

#5 Pesäpallo

Pesäpallo is similar to baseball but has a few big differences. The pitcher stands next to the batter and pitches vertically, and the bases are in a different configuration, with the distance between first and second being smaller than second to third and so on. The field has a back line on it, but unlike traditional baseball, if the ball goes too far back it is considered an out instead of a home run, along with many more changes and adjustments that make it its own game and not just a rip off of baseball.

#6 Calcio Storico

Calcio Storico is an Italian game where all players are required to be volunteers. Two teams of 27 players are placed in a large 80x40 meter pit with two goals that stretch the length of opposing sides. The teams try to get a ball into the goal, but the twist is fighting is permitted (and expected) with the only rules being you cannot kick people in the head and fights must be 1 on 1. Anything else goes and the results can be ghastly. Some injuries result in players spending months in the hospital, but thankfully no deaths have occurred in modern times.. The game is played exclusively in Florence, where city is divided into four districts, each becoming a team (red, blue, white, and green), and games last 50 minutes.

#8 Fighter Kites

Kite fighting is done in many countries, but is most popular in parts of the Middle East, India, and the surrounding countries, as well as Brazil. The kites are held by an abrasive line (in the past, and illegally in many places today, they are coated with tiny glass shards). Many people fly them together with the goal of cutting everyone else's kite strings, which is usually done by pulling or tugging on your line to maneuver your kite.

#10 Pato

Pato is a sport that is a mix of polo and basketball. Eight players on horseback, divided into two teams, fight over a ball covered in handles (formerly played with a dead duck in a sack), and try to throw it into a vertical net. In the past it was played between two ranches, which could mean it was played on a field of 9 or more miles long. In recent years it has been regulated to a smaller field. It is the national sport of Argentina and played exclusively there. A similar version called horseball is played in other places in the world.
