13 DIY challenges faced in Renovation Realities TV shows

13 Home Improvement Tip based off of the show “Renovation Realities”.

#1 Communication Struggles

Communication struggles can come from either not having full disclosure of what each individual is doing, as well as sending hostile messages to others through tonality and body language. In “The Register Job” it was clear the husband was extremely frustrated with putting up dry wall as it kept coming up with problems, his body language did not match his wife’s who was calm and relaxed. In order to avoid communication struggles it should be clear what each person is doing and why. Each person should be courtesy of each other’s presence and not send negative messages.

#2 Anger Issues

Similar to “Communication Struggles”, anger issues need to be addressed as it is more likely to create errors and problems going forward. Maintaining anger levels could be as easy as taking a break to take a nap, or watch TV if the power is not off. Having one person angry can quickly result in two people angry and can cause the job to take even longer.

#3 Chemical Burns

Chemical Burns are no joke, this was shown in the show when not even a visible amount of adhesive remover got onto a workers skin and they immediately felt the burning sensation. Chemical Burns can be prevented through wearing proper materials such as stripper gloves, boots, long pants, long sleeve shirts, and goggles. If someone was to be exposed to a chemical and felt a burning sensation it would be important to wash the affected area for 5-10 minutes.

#4 Personal Injury

Personal Injury can happen in a multitude of different ways, on renovation reality, it can even happen just from performing the basic tasks of moving objects into position. In “The Willis Job” the individual faced groin pain from attempting to put a cement foundation into place. This could be prevented in a number of different ways, from stretching before performing heavier lifting to using proper tools to move items for you. Carrying straps or a dolly could be considered the proper tools for moving an object such as a cement foundation.

#5 Mold

Mold is disgusting and it’s never fun to find it seeping from the corner of the ceiling when removing vinyl from the wall (“The Schiding Job”). There’s not much that can be to prevent mold, but the idea is the remove the mold once it’s found. If the mold is on the wall it can be scrapped off, but if it caused damage to the dry wall it would be good to remove that portion of the dry wall and replace it entirely.

#6 Physical Endurance

Maintaining energy levels for a couple days can be extremely difficult, especially after hitting a wall (not literally) that prevents any progress from being made. Almost every episode has the workers burn out in some way either from frustration or just plain muscle fatigue. Good ways to prevent muscle fatigue is to find out the kind of physical labor that is going to be completed and train those muscles in the way that it would be done on the job. Always eat proper foods before and after working as well.

#7 Conflicting Pipe Placements

A unique case of this happening was on “The Schnur Job” episode which had an exhaust vent in the middle wall where they were hoping to expand their bathroom. Pipe placement cannot be prevented unless the house was created with the intention of a possible remodel. A plumber is required in order to reroute piping through the house.

#8 Improper Cutting of Materials

One of the worst feelings is cutting a piece of wood to find out it was cut a half inch too short, making the piece almost useless. The best way to avoid this is to cut each piece individually and check measurements twice before cutting it. If a cut caused a piece to be too short, it is always possible to throw in a filler piece of wood that fills up any openings.

#9 Reaching a Low Budget

Every episode has the individuals trying to stay under a specific budget. The best way to stay under a budget is to figure out what exactly needs to be done and how it can be done. It should be recommended to find out all the materials that will be needed and the cost of the materials. Also plan for the worst, as a professional might be required for electrical work or plumbing which will increase the cost significantly.

#10 Damaging Flooring

Removing appliances and furniture is required for most home improvement projects and damages are extremely likely to happen. The best way to prevent this is to always pick up and put down items when moving them, never scoot them. If a remodel is going to require the floors to be replaced in an area, don’t replace the floor until everything else is finished and moved back into place.

#11 Mastic Removal

Mastic removal is not a simple process, it typically requires familiarity with floor refinishing to properly remove mastic from a wood floor without damaging it. In “The Nordstorm Job” they had to remove mastic which took them all day as well as all night. Typically it requires applying multiple layers of stripper in order to properly get it off, as well as possibly some scrapping with a putty knife.

#12 Timing Issues

Timing is important and can make or break a remodel, causing it to take significantly longer than it should. “The Schnur Job” has them unable to complete the work because they were not able to reach a deadline they had set before the plumber would have gotten there. This caused them to have to reschedule which cut them back a week, when they originally only had 5 days to complete the work. Always make sure there is enough time to complete a portion of a job, especially if a professional is required, as they could charge for cancellation fees and take over a week to reschedule.

#13 Un-leveled Foundations

Having a level foundation is important especially when anything might be built on top of it. In “The Ramsey Job” they had significant issues getting the foundation to be even, spending most of their day trying to come up with a solution. Creating a post made of wood for a structure made of wood is ideal as it allows customization for height in the circumstance that the ground is uneven.
