13 Most Egregious Gaming Product Placments

Video games are popular and many people spend hours at a time playing them with their eyes glued to the screen and nothing else. Obviously, there’s money to be made if businesses could have gamers stare at products at the same time, and thus, product placement was born.

#2 Verizon (Alan Wake)

Alan himself has a Verizon phone that very prominently shows in a few cut scenes. In episode 6 of the game, you’re treated with a very unmissable billboard of a Verizon advertisement. Later still, you can watch a TV that is plainly showing a Verizon ad.

#3 Assorted Brands (Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker)

Mountain Dew, Doritos, Axe, and Pepsi all show up in the game in actually impactful ways. You can collect them to restore your health and psyche. Not only that, having them in your inventory will revive you in a case of death.

#5 Pizza Weapons and Colonel Sanders (Phantasy Star Portable 2)

Another case of impactful advertisement: players could instantly exchange their starting equipment for much better Pizza hut pans and boxes. There were Pizza Hut stores ready to heal health and energy before big fights. Not only that, Colonel Sanders was a playable character and could shoot lasers out of his cane.

But Mercedes-Benz didn’t just end at Mario Kart. They returned in Super Mario Maker with their own level where Mario is driving a GLA throughout. Win it, and you get to keep the custom sprite to play as in other levels.

#9 Need for Speed Movie (Battlefield 4)

Where other games are not overly intrusive with their advertisements, EA throws all that out the window when it came to Battlefield 4. The game would constantly have pop-up advertisements while on the menu screen, forcing you to at least devote some of your attention to looking at the ad... And then quickly getting rid of the ad so that you can get back to playing.

#11 Burger King (Sneak King)

Same with Captain Novolin, Sneak King is a game about sneaking around as the Burger King on unsuspecting people and giving them Burger King meals. If you get spotted, then you can’t do your job of giving surprise meals. Kind of like a really creepy and weird version of Santa Claus.

#12 Ford (Ford Simulator)

Starting with 1988, Ford released a game, every year for six years, specifically for driving Ford cars at legal speeds and adhering to the law. That’s it: drive a Ford like you would any other car in real life. But it’s a Ford!

#13 Pepsi (Pepsiman)

Truly “Product Placement: The Game.” You collect Pepsi cans, the cutscenes tell you to buy Pepsi, everything is plastered with Pepsi. This game definitely has the highest APM of any game out there. APM in this case being Advertisements Per Minute.
