Polymorphs to Portal Guns: 13 of the Coolest Powers in Video Games

Video games tend to borrow a lot from mythology, comic books, and science fiction/fantasy writing. This means there are many an awesome super power or interesting ability in games. These are some of the coolest out there.

#1 Electricity (Infamous)

Cole MacGrath's lightning powers from Infamous aren't just cool because lightning is cool. What Cole can do with his powers is also cool. He uses his electricity to shock people, magnetize things, cause weather storms, and grind on power lines.

#2 Consume (Protoype)

Alex Mercer's various abilities all stem from exposure to a virus called Blacklight. The most interesting of his abilities is consuming people. When Alex consumes someone he can not only assumes that persons appearance but also gains their memories. It's also so gory I used a picture from the comic tie-in instead of the game.

#3 Dragon Shouts (Skyrim)

The most interesting new feature in the fifth installment of Elder Scrolls is Dragon Shouting. The main character, the Dragonborn, is able to absorb knowledge of the dragon's language from slain dragons. Each word in dragon language is actually a powerful spell. So when dragons fight, they actually debate.

#4 Rewinding Time (Prince of Persia)

Rewinding time is a power that is explored in a lot of games and movies. But one of the earliest examples I can remember for games is from Prince of Persia. The Prince can use a magic dagger containing the sands of time to reverse about 15 seconds of time, even if he is about to fall to his death.

#5 Bullet Time (Max Payne)

Bullet time is an interesting power. Bullet time is used in many games, but as an example I chose Max Payne. Bullet time slows down the action and allows the player to aim and take out enemies in slow motion (usually while doing a bad-ass dive). Interestingly the bullet time in Max Payne is a power that doesn't have an in game story explanation, it is strictly a power the player uses for gameplay.

#7 The Portal Gun (Portal)

Rather than a super human ability, the portal gun is more of a tool. It allows someone to fire two portals, blue and red, which connect two spaces from a distance. The applications of such a device in real life are especially fun to speculate about.

#8 The Ocarina of Time (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)

Another power that is more like a tool. The actual power of the Ocarina of Time comes from music though. Certain songs allow the user to teleport, advance the night to day, or most notable time travel.

#9 Polymorph (World of Warcraft)

The mage class in World of Warcraft has one of the most hilarious and cathartic magic powers ever. Polymorph allows a mage to temporarily transform an enemy into a powerless sheep. The hilarity of using this on a super big strong warrior never gets old.

#10 Kirby’s… Inhaling? Sucking? Consuming? (Kirby)

The cute puffball Kirby has a signature move. What exactly the move is, I'm not sure. Whatever it is Kirby is doing to get enemies into his mouth, when he swallows them he gains their powers. Sort of like a cute version of Alex Mercer from prototype.

#11 Magic Notebook (Scribblenauts)

The game Scribblenauts centers around the idea of using a magic notebook. Whatever is drawn in the notebook becomes real. Whats awesome about this power isn't just the idea. The game is designed to allow multiple creative solutions to problems. You are only limited by your creativity.

#12 The Darkness (The Darkness)

On the day of his 21st birthday, Jackie Estacado is cursed with The Darkness. Commanding dark goblin-like minions, grabbing and slicing with tentacles, and being essentially immortal seem like useful powers for a young gangster. These powers come at a cost though, The Darkness is sentient and talks to Jackie. Is The Darkness Jackie's tool for revenge, or is Jackie The Darkness's pawn.

#13 Sunglasses Embedded in Your Face (Deus Ex: Human Revolution)

Adam Jensen didn't ask for permanent automatic sunglasses. But I doubt he regrets having them. I wish I had sunglasses in my face.

Oh and the arm blades and other augmentations are cool too I guess.
