13 Ways to help the community this holiday season

At a time when we think about what we want to do with family and friends and give thanks, or even what we want to see under the Christmas tree.  Here are 13 ways you and your family can give back in the local Evansville, Indiana area.

#2 Hillcrest Youth Home

This is a place where teens go to live after they have got into trouble with the law.  They always have needs of New or gently used  Hats, Coats, Jackets, School pants, Luggage, Totes, New undergarments (in packages), Towels, Wash cloths, Personal shampoos, Personal deodorants, Laundry pods and at Christmas time something small that they can give the kids that can go under the tree.

#4 Coat-A-Kid

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Steve Schmitt, owner of Don’s Claytons DCI Fine DryCleaning, is committed to annually providing a winter coat for every child who needs one. Since its implementation at the local level, the Coat-A-Kid initiative has distributed over 150,000 coats throughout the community. Each year, from October through December, community members are invited to bring gently used and new coats to any Don’s Claytons location. The coats are cleaned, if needed, and distributed to area infants, children, and teens via the Salvation Army, Evansville Christian Life Center, and in Boonville, at Hope Central.

Graceful Giving helps over 150 families living with HIV/AIDS each year for Christmas. Each family receives a food basket, a $25.00 gift card for the family, plus specific gifts chosen valued at $25.00 per family member. In 2016, the total project cost over $5000.00. Boys & Girls Club of Evansville

700 Bellemeade Avenue

A place where you can help kids and watch them grow.  One of the neat things about Boys and girls club of Evansville they have a Christmas store during the holiday season.  This is a place that the kids can shop for free to get gifts for their families.

Cemo Buddies are an amazing group of volunteers that are always looking for help.  You can donate time to sit with a person going through cemo and get them what they need or donate items like hard candies, hats, and blankets to be given to the people that are going through cancer treatments

Patchwork has served as an organization to serve neighborhoods in the area. Today Patchwork serves individuals and families with unique arts and enrichment programming for youth, an emergency food pantry, and a health ministry. They are located at 100 Washington Ave.

#10 Ozanam Family Shelter

The Ozanam Family Shelter provides emergency shelter services to homeless families.  The shelter is open to all families regardless of race, color, creed, age or sex.  Ozanam's mission is to provide homeless familes with a quality shelter for emergency situations without charge on a first come first served basis.

 We are the largest emergency temporary shelter in Evansville, IN that houses single women, single mothers, single fathers, two-parent families, and couples with no children who find themselves in a homeless situation.

The house of Bread & Peace is another shelter for women and women with kids. They have numerous ways you can volunteer. They need people for lawn care,  office work, mentoring residents, and house maintenance. They are located at 250 E. Chandler Ave. Evansville IN 47713

Volunteers are needed year round but especially during the holidays. volunteers help with feedings, behavior and human interaction, take dogs for walks. Fosters are also greatly appreciated so that these animals do not have to spend the holidays pinned up

#13 STS. MARY AND JOHN SOUP KITCHENS

Every Sunday of the month, Sts. Mary and John parish holds an afternoon Soup Kitchen at 2:00 pm in the cafeteria on the St. John Campus, 625 Bellemeade Ave. Several other parishes join with Sts. Mary and John Parish to provide volunteers and food each Sunday to feed those in need.On the 3rd Saturday of every month, Sts. Mary and John sponsors and staffs a morning Soup Kitchen at The Potter’s Wheel at 319 Jefferson Ave. The parish supplies the food and a dedicated group of volunteers.Soup Kitchen volunteers prepare meals, serve the hungry, and clean up after their work is finished.  The time commitment is approximately four hours.If you are interested in fighting hunger in our community and would like more information about the Soup Kitchens, please contact Pat Fitzsimmons at 812-425-1577 ext. 3501.
