Day Backpack Brand Review

It seems like everywhere you turn; a new company has made another day backpack. The list just keeps growing with producer of day backpacks. I felt the need to review day backpacks for those reasons. Many people are extremely brand loyal which makes it so hard to figure out which review is an actual review or just someone that has never tried another brands’ backpack.

I reviewed ten different day backpack brands on the following criteria; price, zipper wear, and Material longevity/stain resilience. I reviewed Swiss Gear, The North Face, Patagonia, Under Armour, Herschel, JanSports, Adidas, Fuel, Vera Bradley, and Oakley. The way I researched was by visiting the brands websites, reading through the reviews on some of their best sellers. I also searched for reviews on Amazon to get another point of view. The reason for this is that some of the reviews on the brands websites seemed to be biased.

I concluded that Swiss Gear placed first, Adidas placed second, and Herschel placed third according to my criteria. Swiss Gear rated the highest when it came to zipper wear partially because the company does not just use the smaller size, instead they use a larger zipper for the highest used pockets. The material longevity/stain resilience also scored extremely well, the company uses a very durable blend of polyester that withstands normal wear and tear. The overall price is a little higher than other brands, but you get a higher quality for only a few dollars more. The Adidas brand fared well getting second overall, the material longevity/stain resilience did very well because of the long life of the straps and cloth of the backpack. The price and zipper did not do as well as Swiss Gear which is why it got second. I was surprised Herschel placed where it did. Their material/stain resilience was really good as well as the zipper quality, being water proof and having a long wear time. The price is very affordable especially for the quality.

The other brands that I reviewed include The North Face. This brand is my personal favorite but according to the criteria I choose it did not do as well, mostly because of the high prices. Patagonia also does a good job with the material strength as well as the zipper quality, but the price was much higher than similar quality backpacks. Under Armour had really positive reviews for their material and stain resilience but they some of their products do have issues with their zippers getting caught. Their cost was fairly reasonable for the quality. JanSports’ zipper quality performs poorly over time, many reviews complained that the zippers do not last very long. The price was very affordable, but the overall quality did not have as long of a life span as some of the more expensive brands. The Fuel brand had quite a lot of positive reviews about their stain resistance fabric as well as the toughness of the material. Costumers had a few complaints about Fuels’ zippers getting stuck, but the price was very affordable. Oakley had a very positive response to their durability of their backpacks as well as their zippers, their price however was a little expensive. Vera Bradley was the last brand that I reviewed, their products did fair well with the zippers, but the price was one of the highest of all the brands I reviewed. The material is a cotton blend which stains fairly easily and has a tendency to wear through over time.

Overall, I was fascinated with my conclusions, Swiss Gear doing the best overall, Adidas placing second, and Herschel in third. I did not expect Herschel to do as well as it did, and I will definitely consider them when I am in the market for a new backpack. I will definitely be better prepared to give advice when someone I know is in search of a new backpack.

Swiss Gear rated the highest when it came to zipper wear partially because the company does not just use the smaller size, instead they use a larger zipper for the highest used pockets.
