Peanut Butter Review

Formal/ Social Review—Peanut Butter

Riley Laffoon

For this review project, I chose to review different brands of creamy peanut butter.  I chose Smart Balance, Great Value, Jif, Peter Pan, and Skippy.  The factors I took into consideration when reviewing the peanut butter were price, nutrition, and taste.   After considering these factors, I chose what in my opinion were the best three peanut butters and then chose my top choice of what brand of peanut butter I believe you should buy.

I chose to review peanut butter for a couple of reasons.  First, I really like peanut butter and eat a lot of it, so I was curious of what brand I should be buying.  Second, peanut butter is something that a lot of people eat so I thought it would be a good idea to inform people on what I think the best brand of peanut butter is.

First, I took into consideration the price of each brand of peanut butter.  The cheapest was the Great Value brand, at $1.43. Jif and Skippy were both $2.08, Peter Pan was $1.84, and Smart Balance was the most expensive at $2.78.  The second factor was nutrition.  Great Value was the healthiest with 15 grams of fat, 135 mg of sodium, and 180 calories per serving.  Smart Balance had 15 grams of fat, 140 mg of sodium, and 190 calories per serving, Jif had 16 grams of fat, 140 mg of sodium, and 190 calories per serving, Skippy had 16 grams of fat, 150 mg of sodium, and 190 calories per serving, and the least healthy was Peter Pan with 17 grams of fat, 140 mg of sodium, and 210 calories per serving.  Lastly, I tasted each brand of peanut butter to see which I thought was the best.  Smart balance had a decent taste, it wasn’t bad but out of the five it was probably my least favorite.  Great Value was my third favorite because it surprised me and tasted better than I expected.  Peter Pan, which is the brand that I have been buying, had a pretty good flavor but not as good as some of the others.  My second favorite was Skippy; I had never tried this brand before and thought it had a very good taste to it.  The best tasting, in my opinion, was Jif.  Jif had a very good taste and consistency and was definitely the best tasting out of these five brands of peanut butter that I reviewed.

Using the price, nutritional value, and taste, I found what in my opinion were the top three brands of creamy peanut butter out of the brands Smart Balance, Great Value, Jif, Peter Pan, and Skippy.  Jif was my number one pick because it had a great taste, not too high of a price, and even though it wasn’t the healthiest, it was one of the healthier ones and I think the taste compensates for the few extra calories it has.  My second favorite was Skippy because it had a very good taste, was also not too high of a price, and it had a decent nutritional value.  My third favorite was Great Value because it was the least expensive, the healthiest, and the taste was pretty good, but not as good as my first two choices.  In conclusion, when looking for a brand of peanut butter to buy, if you are looking for something that tastes great, has a good price, and has a pretty good nutritional value, I suggest Jif.

#1 Smart Balance Peanut Butter

This brand of peanut butter cost $2.78, and was the most expensive out of the five brands.  It contained 15 grams of fat, 140 mg of sodium, and 190 calories per serving.  Smart Balance had a pretty good taste, but wasn't one of my favorites.
