Streaming Services Review

We’ll start with Netflix. Netflix’s selection of shows and movies trumps the other services in the list in terms of sheer numbers. Coming in at somewhere between 4000 and 5500 shows and movies according to Reelgood.com and finder.com.

This service granted its large library of titles can be one of the more expensive options on this list. Starting out at only eight dollars per month gives access to all the titles but little else. For almost 14 dollars per month there are several more features but in my opinion they are not worth paying six dollars more.

The website itself is similar in many regards to the rest of the services on this list but Netflix, in my opinion, is one, if not the, simplest. It has numerous categories to choose from, a sidebar for newly added shows, and a search bar and little else.

Hulu comes in slightly behind with about 3000 shows and movies according to hulu.com. Hulu also boasts a large number, 208 to be exact, titles that are exclusively streamed on hulu. Hulu also has more premium options that allow for the streaming of live TV from the channels HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax.

Hulu’s price is a strong selling point. It cost only 8 dollars a month for everything and a handful of the premium options offered by Netflix. Streaming live TV also costs extra at around 40 dollars total to stream from all three channels.

Hulu and Netflix both have similarly set up websites. They are both easy to navigate and intuitive. Although, Hulu, at least in my own experience, seems to have a significant amount of overlap in their categories. I felt as though I would see the same titles in numerous places.

Our third entry is amazon prime video. Amazon’s selection of titles, I found, to be kind of lacking. Of their 59 original series I recognized only two of them. There are some good movies but largely there were only titles I didn’t know or were just not of the same caliber as Netflix or Hulu. They did, however, have one thing that neither of the other two services, covered already, had. They provided a handful of web series from people like funny or die and machinima.

Amazon costs roughly 8.25 per month. This may seem a bit high considering the seemingly poor selection of titles but one must keep in mind that they are not paying exclusively for the streaming service. With the streaming, they get access to all the other perks offered by amazon.

In fourth, we have Acorn TV. The only reason I have placed this service above last place is because it is an independent streaming service unlike the final service. Acorn’s selection consists entirely of British television so as an American I can say that I have only heard of a small number of these shows and movies.

This service is however the cheap man’s dream come true. At only 5 dollars a month you get access to all the titles available on this website. And for nothing extra get access to features Netflix would charge extra for.

The setup again follows the same pattern as the others so far in this list. On its homepage are categories or different shows and genres. Along with a where you left off section just like all the other services.

Finally, we have YouTube Red. I found the selection offered by this service to be lacking more so than any other service mentioned. YouTube channels strictly creates all the content and offers none of the shows you may want to watch from actual TV networks.

The price is another significant disadvantage. Costing roughly ten dollars to start this service offers very little in my eyes. However similarly to Amazon Prime Video, much of what you are paying for is not the streaming but the perks that come with the subscription.

The setup of this website is exactly like a standard youtube page. It has all the videos lined up and in columns and must be sifted through or searched for the video you want to see.

#5 YouTube Red

Barely even classified as a streaming service, in my own opinion. This service feels like just an attempt to get more money from people and doesn't really give much back. There's very little, in my eyes, of anything worth anyone's time.
